The Sarasota Sumi-e Society, founded in 1990, is a local affiliate of the Sumi-e Society of America, Inc. (SSA), a national non-profit organization founded in 1963. The mission of NYSS as well as its parent SSA is:

* To foster an appreciation of East Asian brush painting as well as the techniques and materials used in this art form.

* To create an art bridge between East Asian and Western cultures.

* To facilitate the exhibition of sumi-e artwork in public and private venues.

* To conduct educational activities consonant with the educational aims of SSA namely, lectures, demonstrations, workshops, exhibitions, excursions to museums and networking with cultural and art institutions.
